What our students say:

"The work which I was given in school was often quite easy, so when I finished it I would get bored and distracted and start to mess around. This got me permanently excluded from school when I was 13, and I was out of education for around five months. Then in September of that year, I was offered a place on Redbridge College’s BTEC Introductory Diploma in IT.

My disruptive behaviour stopped at college because the work was more of a challenge for me, so I was always kept occupied. If I finished something, I was always given something else to work on. After completing the Introductory Diploma, my tutors agreed that I could skip the First Diploma and go straight onto the National Certificate in IT.

In the first year I achieved three merits, three distinctions, a Jack Petchey Award and a nomination for the Student of the Year. At the end of the course I achieved a Double Distinction and was offered a place at Nottingham Trent University to study a BSc in Computer Science.

Before I started at Redbridge College, I had never thought about going to university, and now I am doing a degree course aged just 17 years old. If I hadn’t gone to college I would probably still be doing a low paid, part-time job.

I'm really enjoying doing the degree, and almost everything that I studied throughout my time at Redbridge College has been very useful for me here.

Now I hope to work in the software engineering industry, preferable doing application programming."

What our students say:

Maisie won the Student of the Year Award, presented by Olympic gold medallist Tessa Sanderson

"Welcome to Redbridge College! I know it looks big and scary now but you’ll soon grow to love it. I go to school three days a week and college two days.

When I first came to college I was scared and thought I would struggle with everything from learning on the course to making new friends - I couldn’t have been more wrong! Even going from a school environment to a college one wasn’t as difficult as I thought, because everyone is so supportive and straight away I loved the freedom and independence that you get at college. The staff here are always happy to listen to you and when I told them I have learning difficulties they gave me all the support I needed.

As for making friends, I have found that if you just be yourself, you will get on with people really well. As you work with different people in the classroom you get to know them a bit more too. My friends and I usually go to the canteen for breakfast and lunch (I always start the day with a coffee and tuna Panini!) and the food there is really nice. You also meet new people there and that’s how your friendship groups gradually get bigger and bigger.

The college holds some fun events and I was involved in a sponsored walk for Red Nose Day last year, which was good fun, and there’s always things like talent shows and hairdressing shows going on.

Coming to Redbridge College has given me more than just confidence and new friends; I have been given amazing opportunities like meeting Sir Alan Sugar and Olympic gold medallist Tessa Sanderson.

When I won the Student of the Year prize in June 2009, I felt like I was in a dream. I used to let things like my learning difficulties hold me back but getting that award made me realise that it didn’t have to be that way. All I do is try my best and that’s enough.

So choose your course from this website, try your best and that’s all you need to worry about. Who knows: maybe you’ll be the next Student of the Year?"
