Would you like to know how top producers like Dr Dre or Calvin Harris create their latest hits? Maybe you would like to produce tracks for bands like Kings of Leon or Arcade Fire.
In a Level 2 Music Technology session, learners at Redbridge College use the latest industry software to record their own short tracks using only real recorded sounds.
Our publicity-shy music lecturer explains to learners that the very techniques they are putting in to place are the same used as producer and innovator of ambient music, Brian Eno.
Across Redbridge College’s two fully-equipped music recording studios, learners have taken turns to step up to the mic and record everything from hand-claps to a rustling crisp packet which are then manipulated into drum loops and baselines using an array of studio techniques and software effects.
Now they are busy using Logic software to manipulate each of the different sounds, identifying which loops to slice and manipulate, and putting them together to create a composition.
The session forms part of the course’s Producing Musical Recordings module, and within hours the two groups of learners have a finished piece which they play back to the class.
Our music lecturer explains: “Most learners are not aware of the creative possibilities of using their own recorded sounds to create their own unique compositions.
"Most people use pre-recorded sounds but if you know how to create your own from scratch, you begin to define an original sound.
“Within weeks of enrolling with us, learners are confidently creating their own compositions.
“Using only real recorded sounds in this task encouraged learners to be creative and to think outside the box - important skills that will be invaluable as they progress on to higher level study or in to the industry.”
Redbridge College offers music qualifications at entry, intermediate and advanced levels, with pathways available in technology or performance.
Many former learners at the college are now working successfully in the music industry!
