Course Description 
This practical, work-related course will prepare you for working in the applied science industry or for organisations that use scientific principles such as the health service, government establishments, and research and educational institutions. You'll complete projects and assigments that are based on real-life workplace situations, activities and demands.

How long is the course and when will it start?: 
This is a full-time, one-year course starting in September.
What are the entry requirements?: 
You need to have three GCSEs at Grade D, including English and maths, or equivalent qualification. If you are under 19 years of age, you will be required to supply a satisfactory reference from your previous school.
What will I study?: 

Core units you will study include:

  • Chemistry and our earth
  • Energy and our universe
  • Biology and our environment

Plus choose from these specialists units:

  • Applications of chemistry
  • Substances
  • Health applications of life sciences
  • The living body
  • Science in medicine
  • Chemical analysis and detection
  • Science in the world of work
How will I be taught and assessed?: 
You'll be taught by our highly skilled team of staff who will pass on their years of industry knowledge and experience to you. You will be assessed through coursework covering practical sessions in the laboratory, educational visits and written work.
Equipment and resources: 
You will need to provide stationery including pens, paper, calculator, lever arch files, dividers and clear plastic wallets.
Progression and career opportunities: 

On successful completion of this course you will have the opportunity to further enhance your skills and knowledge by progressing on to the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science at Redbridge College. You will also have the option to enter employment, where potential roles could include:

  • Quality control technician/analyst: carrying out analytical tests using modern instrumentation and ICT and interpreting data
  • Medical physics technician: supporting the use of x-ray and other imaging/scanning instruments in a hospital
  • Research laboratory technician: working on the development of new drugs, managing projects which include setting up apparatus, measuring and handling chemical substances, following procedures, carrying out observations and measurements, separating out and analysing products
Further information: 
BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A*– C and is normally taken as a full-time course.
