Jana Slivova (19+ Student)

Jana comes from the Czech Republic and joined Redbridge College in 2011 as an Adult ESOL student at Entry 3. She came to work in the UK as an au pair with a local family and quickly adapted to life here, eventually finding a job in the catering industry. She continued to study with us and progressed to Level 2 ESOL, successfully passing all her exams at 3 different levels.

Last year she started an Access to Higher Education course (Social Sciences & Humanities) with us, which she passed with distinction. She was awarded the ‘Student of the Year’ prize for her curriculum area and has been accepted on a degree course at UEL, to study psychology, starting in September. Her ambition is to work with young people in a social/psychological capacity and she attributes her success to the support she has received from the college over the past 4 years.

Jana says: ‘I am so grateful to my teachers at Redbridge College – I have received so much help and support from them and I feel well-equipped to undertake a degree course, using the study skills I learned here’.

Amin Hadaegh-Pour (19+ Student) started in Adult ESOL in September last year as a Level 1 student. He came from Iran, under difficult circumstances, but very quickly demonstrated a determination to learn and progress with English in order to achieve his goal of going to university to study Electrical Engineering.

After a few weeks in Level 1 it was clear that Amin had made exceptional progress, working hard in class and developing his language skills with a large amount of independent study. He was moved up to Level 2 within the first half term. He would always bring extra work he had done at home for his teachers to mark and would constantly challenge himself to improve. He had also begun the process of applying to university in the UK.

In April Amin achieved excellent IELTs scores in all language skills and was offered a place at Cardiff University to study a BSc. in Electrical Engineering.

Amin is a perfect example of how determination and hard work can lead to achieving your goals. He says:

“The thing I liked most about Redbridge College was its approachable teachers; they always helped me in any way they could and worked ‘beyond the call of duty’ on many occasions!”

Amin has now completed his Engineering degree at Cardiff University and was one of a handful of students who got a First! He has been offered a place on a Master’s Degree and is now considering a work placement at an Engineering company. Well done, Amin!
