How to apply to become a Governor

At Redbridge College we endeavour to follow good practice in corporate governance as established not just in the public sector but in the private sector as well. This means that when we need new members for our Corporation we turn first for advice to our own Search Committee. This Committee has a duty to consider the skills and experience that the Corporation needs at the time that it is recruiting. These skills and experience do not refer to an individual's professional or other qualifications and experience as in lawyer, surveyor and so on. Rather they refer to the skills and qualities that the Board deem necessary for it to carry out its duties. Such skills include the ability to act as an ambassador for the College within the Community, and that suggests someone whose experience includes a good knowledge of the Community the College serves.

A Community is a diverse concept and so we will look to match our Community and our College diversity within our Board of governors. We need people who understand the needs of specific groups within our community and who understand the cultural and educational character of the area. We need people who are employers who can articulate for us the developmental needs of the wide range of employers whose employees look to the College to update their skills and qualifications. We need an understanding of how the economic life of our community is developing and if the community has very large employers in, for example the health and social care, construction or hospitality then we need people with experience in those areas to advise and guide us.

If you think you could make a contribution to Redbridge College by being a governor, our Clerk to the Corporation would be glad to hear from you. He will also be glad to discuss with you the wider range of skills and experience that our Board is currently seeking. Please contact Judith Nelson on 020 8548 7418 or email jnelson@redbridge-college.ac.uk but do note that we do not always have a vacancy and it may be some time before we can take an application forward. The documents that follow give more detail of our Search Committee and describe how it goes about its job:
