Course Description
This course has a mixture of core and specialist units which cover the knowledge, understanding and competency necessary for employment within the sector. As such the BTEC First Diploma offers a qualification which can extend a learner’s programme of study and provide vocational emphasis within. The course has technology and performance pathways, students will be guided at interview as to which pathway to take.
What qualifications do I get?
BTEC First Diploma in Music Technology or Performance (depending on which pathway you take).
How will I be assessed?
This will take the form of both practical and written projects building a portfolio of work.
What standards do I need in order to join the course?
Four GCSE's graded D or above, or you should be able to show you have undertaken suitable work experience or have completed a Level 1 qualification. The ability to perform on a musical instrument to an appropriate level (live performance) is required for performers and some familiarity with music software for technology students.

16-18: You will also study English, Maths and ICT to support your main course,
19+: You may study one of the vocational study skills if appropriate.
What equipment will I need
All technical equipment you will need for the course will be provided by the college. In addition you will be expected to purchase additional materials and books to aid study. Instrumental players will need their own instrument, leads, drum-sticks, vocalists their own microphones; CDs and/or memory sticks for saving files and projects; your own headphones would be useful.
Where can I go from here?
Successful candidates would be able to enter initial employment, at a junior level, in such areas as music teaching, music publishing or music industry promotions.

Supplementary info
Content is delivered by active musicians with support from other Industry professionals, who provide talks, workshops and master classes. Opportunities to perform in local, regional, and national music events are provided.
Your English, Maths and ICT skill levels will be assessed during the first two weeks of your programme and you will be assigned classes or workshops to help you develop these skills at the levels most appropriate for you. Attendance at these classes or workshops is compulsory for students of all ages.
