Course Description
If English is not your first language, the Adult ESOL courses will give you the chance to improve your English and gain qualifications. The teachers will help you to speak, understand, read and write English at a level to suit you.
What qualifications do I get?
The College runs courses from Entry 1 (Beginners), to Level 2 (Advanced). At the end of the course you may be able to take the Cambridge Skills for Life ESOL examinations in Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing.
How will I be assessed?
In addition to the Cambridge ESOL examinations, you will take formal tests at the end of each term. Your teachers will also regularly test and assess your classroom work and you will take part in regular individual tutorials with your personal tutor to talk about your progress and how you are going to improve.
What standards do I need in order to join the course?
There are courses from Beginner to Advanced. When you come to College you will have a test and a personal interview to help select the right course for you.
What will I study?
You will develop your speaking and listening skills and get help to develop your reading and writing. The topics covered will be selected to meet your needs and interests. If you are on an Entry level course, Citizenship will be included in some of your lessons. At all levels, you will study work-related topics such as CV writing and careers research, which will help you to find employment or to go onto further study. You will also have the opportunity to plan and go on educational visits to help you learn about British customs and institutions.
What equipment will I need
You will need a course book for your lessons, a folder, paper, pens and pencils and an English dictionary. A USB memory stick is useful for saving your work.
Where can I go from here?
After successfully achieving Entry 3 Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing you will progress onto Level 1 BTEC and NVQ courses. If you achieve higher level ESOL qualifications, you will be able to join higher level courses.
