Redbridge College football team in final against Barking Abbey
Redbridge College’s football team played a highly competitive match final against Barking Abbey held at Wadham Lodge Sports Ground last week (13/05/09).
The game started well for Redbridge College team who had the better of the early exchanges. However, after 10 minutes a breakaway attack by Barking Abbey led to a cross being redirected by a Redbridge defender into his own net.
The lead was held for 15 minutes when Redbridge counter attacked with a long pass towards Redbridge striker John Malongi. The game was locked at 1-1 well into the latter stages of the second half and it looked as though either team could win the tightly fought match.
Fortunately for Barking Abbey one of their attacks resulted in a debatable goal being given after it looked like their forward had handled the ball before he shot towards the goal.
This left Redbridge reeling and in the final minute of the game Barking Abbey were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Redbridge area, which was coolly dispatched to make the final score line 3-1.
Danny Gibson, Sports Lecturer, said, “In reflection of the game itself, the boys deserve praise with their intensive efforts and good periods of play”.
