English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) 19+
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) are courses for students who do not speak English as their first language, and need to improve their English language skills and gain qualifications. Our experienced ESOL teachers will help you read, write, speak and understand English at a higher level. Our ESOL courses are very popular and you will quickly find yourself among friends as you succeed in a supportive learning environment. Our adult ESOL courses are held at our Ilford Campus, conveniently located next to The Exchange Ilford and a one-minute walk from Ilford Rail Sation.
WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?
An ESOL course at New City College will not only improve your language skills but will enable you to gain confidence, explore aspects of life and culture in the UK and provide opportunities for you to progress into higher study or employment. Our teachers are highly experienced and will support you individually with your learning throughout the course.
HOW LONG IS THE COURSE AND WHEN WILL IT START?
Courses are starting throughout the year and part-time classes take place during the day or evening.
ESOL courses have levels starting from beginner all the way to advanced. When you come for your interview, you will have an assessment to determine which course is right for you.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
ESOL courses focus on reading, writing and conversation skills like speaking and listening. You will also be able to learn Citizenship if you are on an entry level course. At all levels, you will learn work-related skills such as careers research and how to write your CV. ESOL groups have fun by going on visits around London to learn more about British customs and way of life.
HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT AND ASSESSED?
You will take Cambridge ESOL examinations, as well as formal tests for each term. You will get progress updates and ongoing assessments from your personal tutor based on your classroom work and participation.
WHAT EQUIPMENT WILL I NEED?
You will need a course book for your classes, as well as a folder, paper, pens and an English language dictionary, which must be brought to every lesson. We also recommend brining a USB stick for saving your work.
PROGRESSION AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
If you successfully complete your course, you can progress to more advanced ESOL levels. Once you have achieved higher ESOL levels, you will be able to progress to other areas of the college for further study and qualifications.
