REDBRIDGE TEACHERS WIN NATIONAL TEACHING ‘OSCAR’ AT TOP AWARDS SHOW

The Hospitality and Catering teaching team at New City College are celebrating being named ‘Britain’s Classroom Heroes’ after beating off stiff competition to win a prestigious Gold Plato award at the grand final of the Pearson teaching awards, held in London.

Billed as "The Oscars for Teachers", the Gold Plato award is one of the highest accolades in education and the team were selected from over 29,000 nominations and were the only winners from a further education college. All other winners were from schools.
The award recognises the team's exceptionally high regard to training young people, and working with them to develop their professional skills as well as helping them to grow their self-confidence and self-esteem, preparing them for higher-level study or employment in the sector.

Gerry McDonald, Group Principal and CEO at New City College said: “This award is fitting recognition of the team's dedication and determination to develop the curriculum and our students' learning experience. They have well and truly put New City College in the spotlight for what we are best at - supporting students from all backgrounds to exceed their potential, preparing them for fulfilling careers.”

Based at the college’s Chadwell Heath campus in Redbridge, the team had previously won a silver award in June, and were invited to the grand final where they were presented with one of only 11 Gold awards won by individuals and teams from across the education sector.

Sharon Sullivan, Group Curriculum Director for Hospitality, Catering and Performing Arts said: "I am extremely proud of the Hospitality and Catering Team for receiving the Gold Plato Award for Further Education Team of the Year. This is a demonstration of their continued hard work and dedication and we are very honoured to receive this recognition for such a prestigious award. This team has an exceptional ethos with regards to training young people with an excellent student success rate over the years."

The Pearson Teaching Awards is an annual celebration of exceptional teachers and teaching and are open to every school in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The awards were established by Lord Puttnam CBE in 1998 and are managed by the Teaching Awards Trust, an independent charity.
The ceremony, which was hosted by BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty with Countryfile's Sean Fletcher, will be broadcast on BBC Two at 6pm on Sunday 29th October, as “Britain’s Classroom Heroes”.
